"Strong and Courageous" Portfolio Reflections

“Did you know…that the verse that Mr. Visser selects to lead the school sets the Christ driven focus for the year? This year it was Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

I hear these each year in the chapel and feel energize and grateful for this school and my kids ability to attend it.  Then after a bit I kinda forget it.  Well recently I had the absolute treat of attending the Teacher Portfolio reviews.  What are these you ask? Well they are a cumulative year over year portfolio (literally) of the goals and accomplishments of our teachers each year that are directly influenced by these yearly themes.  I know, right, super cool!  So I thought it would be awesome to share some of the things we (the School Board and Education Committee) learned….

The theme plays out in PE, where kids are asked “how did my play glorify God?”

The theme has created space for the kids, even the youngest ones, to shine as they recounted heroes that were strong and courageous in the Bible (those taught at School and home.)

The theme helps foster a supporting and safe community to carry the kids through tough times like death of loved ones and when friends move away

The theme demands Art be more than just pretty, rather an expression of the child’s voice

The theme is a great platform for music, helps the kids brave trying new songs and instruments

The theme has encouraged several teachers to try new things: New learning activities and experiences for our kids

The theme inspires teachers to “stay at the wheel” - keep at their best, modeling perseverance and personal high standards to our kids

These are just a few of the ways our teachers are creating inspired kids of great character.
