Revisiting Standards

It's now the time of year when new student applications start rolling in, and school visits and tours are nearly daily occasions. This means the admission team is fielding all kinds of questions about what curriculum we use, what testing we utilize, and how we measure success.

As a school, these are questions that we constantly revisit. In the high school, that means developing a program that we call Phenomenal Fridays (you can find a couple past blog posts about that here). In elementary, we’ve been exploring changing our science curriculum. All these changes and discussions are guided by our mission statement: Shoreline Christian School works in partnership with Christian families and their church to challenge students in preschool through high school to celebrate that all of creation belongs to God, to respond to God by developing their unique gifts and abilities, to live as dynamic and transforming influences for the glory of God.

Practically speaking, what does this really mean? Administrator Tim Visser discussed this in a past blog post, outlining four questions that guide our conversations:

  • What do you want students to learn?
  • How will you know what and how well students are learning?
  • How will you engage students in relevant learning?
  • How will we respond when students learn quickly or already know or have difficulty learning?
